At Lumen-8 Architectural Lighting, we celebrate the marriage of artistry and innovation, exemplified in the latest enhancement to the Die Neue Sammlung Museum’s Glass Room. Thanks to the generosity of Lutz Holz, a luminary in the world of vintage Murano glass, the museum now boasts a breathtaking Giogali curtain of crystal hooks.
Mr. Holz, esteemed for his extensive collection of Murano glass from the past century, has made a significant contribution to the museum's already impressive array of glassworks. Known for his collaboration with Marc Heiremans, a leading expert in Murano glass, Mr. Holz has also organized numerous influential exhibitions across Europe. His work has graced prestigious institutions such as the Grassi Museum in Leipzig, the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, and the Murano Glass Museum, as well as venues in Switzerland, Spain, and Portugal.
Die Neue Sammlung, founded in 1907 as the world's first design museum, holds one of the most extensive design collections globally. Its Glass Room, dedicated to showcasing the art of glassmaking, now includes the stunning Giogali curtain, a gift from Mr. Holz. This addition joins an array of objects from esteemed donors and institutions, including the Alexander Tutsek Foundation, Gustav van Treeck, Laboratories for Mosaics and Stained Glass, and Thierry Boissel. These contributions underscore a shared appreciation for the multifaceted beauty of glass, from its myriad colors to the brilliance of its craftsmanship.
The exhibition, curated by Angelika Nollert, Xenia Riemann-Tyroller, and Josef Straßer, underscores the ubiquitous role of glass in our lives. Glass is a material rich in technical complexity, requiring expertise in blowing, pressing, casting, and various other techniques. The exhibition highlights a spectrum of glass items, from mass-produced everyday objects to unique handcrafted pieces and innovative architectural designs. The display not only captures the allure of both colored and colorless glass but also reflects the material’s technical artistry, versatile design potential, and diverse functionality.
The design and spatial concept of the Glass Room, crafted by the Munich-based studio OHA, seamlessly integrates design, craftsmanship, and free art. This approach reflects Die Neue Sammlung's commitment to interdisciplinary and international perspectives.
